Certification Products - Navigating to the Next Step from within the Learning Product

After completing a learning product that is required as part of Step 1 of a certification, is there a way to add a navigation button/prompt of some kind (e.g., "next step") to the end of the learning product?

Ideally it would take you to the next required activity/product, but at minimum return you to the certification menu/tree. Right now you need to complete the learning product, return to your Enrollments page, click back into the certification, then click Step 2.

  • I think the issue might be exacerbated by the in template view not having a clear exit/back button to take the user back to where they came from. We are looking into ways to add a similar "exit" like feature as exists for the full screen enrollment view. Have you tried it from the full screen view? Does it seem less jarring? - Adam Spicer

@Adam - yes, it's better with the "exit" button and return URL back to the certification menu/page. The connotation of the word "exit" seems a little off to me though. As a user when I've finished step 1 of 2, I wouldn't necessarily think "exit" would take me back to the menu. Is there any way the button label could be dynamic? For example, if a return URL exists and is for a certification product the label read "Return to Certification Menu", if not read "Exit".

One more question on certification products - right now you must have at least one Learning Product group as a prerequisite. Is it possible to disable that requirement? One of our programs is truly a one-step certification, with all activity contained as part of the certification's lesson structure. In that sense it's structured more as a basic learning product, but we need the "completion valid for" functionality associated with certifications.

  • Matt - great idea... we will see what we can do with the dynamic "exit" button. - Adam Spicer
  • The certification products really are tuned for a collection of things that you have to do in order to become certified... However, we've worked to develop the completion valid for... feature to be generic and available across all types of Products - but right now we've only added it as an option that you can control on the certification products. We were holding out on other areas until we heard the need from our clients. I'll add it to the short list for upcoming sprints. - Adam Spicer

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but we are just now pursuing using Certifications. I would also like to not have to select a minimum of 1 learning product as a requirement for a group. We could potentially build a certification where a particular step is all just related additional training and none of it is required.
