Failing a quiz and retaking the lesson, but not the entire course?

Is there a workflow that would allow someone to retake only a failed lesson within a course instead of needing to re-enroll and start over? The use case for us are courses with 5-10 lessons, each containing a short quiz after a required learning activity. If a user fails the quiz on lesson #4 (3 attempts) we'd like them to be able to start over on lesson #4, but retain their progress for lessons 1-3. We'd prefer not to create each lesson as a separate course.

Is anyone using a similar workflow?

  • What conditions do you see granting additional attempts beyond the max set on an assessment? Are you using the opportunity to sell a retake? - Adam Spicer
  • Selling a retake could be another use case long term and definitely a great option to have, but not our immediate goal. It would have to be configurable by lesson/assessment, but the idea would be to have something along the lines of a "start this lesson over" button available to users after they fail the final allowed attempt. This would reset their progress on the lesson and direct them back to retake all activities that gate the assessment, or maybe we can select which specific activities would need to be retaken via the configuration. The rest of the course progress from other lessons should be unaffected. Similar to the effect of the "Expire and Re-Enroll" button on the staging site, but limited to the lesson. Maybe even set the max number of times a lesson can be reset via the configuration? - Matt Kamen
  • Matt - It sounds like an interesting feature, but at this time we don't have plans for a process as you describe that would allow the user to retake a lesson. If this is something your organization feels adamantly, about please reach out to your client advocate and we can take the discussion offline from there. - Adam Spicer
