Are there any super-users of discussion board activities out there? We are just now starting to use this feature (first program to use it launches in March). Do you feel a notification about activity on a discussion board post that you've commented on or started would be helpful? Do you have a need for any kind of report or printout of posts?

I think a notification to learners who have already participated in the discussion could help foster a collaborative/social learning experience and bring them back after they've completed all their requirements -- I believe section admins already get one. Do you think it should apply to all scenarios (e.g., MOOCs might generate too many notifications) or need to be configurable product-by-product?

Hmm. Instead of configuration by product, I would prefer for the learner to choose configuration - perhaps default to notifying the learner, but allow them to exclude discussion board notifications from their triggers. I can see how it would get out of hand quickly - especially since we offer a number of products that are MOOC-ish and have thousands of participants - but if it was configured by product, I would have no way to decide which products to turn it on and which to turn it off, you know? Perhaps at the bottom of the discussion board itself, there could be a checkmark for "Notify me when someone comments on my post" and it defaults to being checked?

Good idea -- it fits the trend of allowing a learner to set their personal preferences and opt-in/out as they see fit. But I do think the notification still needs to fit the "daily digest" model. Especially with thousands of participants it would be overwhelming to be notified of each individual comment separately.

  • Colette Bevis

Agreed, absolutely - daily digest is the way to go.

It would be great if there were more options for what notifications people get about discussion board activities. In particular, I've had learners ask if they can be notified when someone responds to _their_ discussion post. That would be a helpful option.
